Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Drive to Saspotse, Trek Saspotse to Shepherds Place, 3-4 hrs.

Drive by car from Leh to Saspotse. The pleasant 65 km drive along the Indus will take around 2 hrs. Saspotse is a village located behind Likir if proceeded via a less driven road to Hemis Shukpachan. Start from the centre of the village at 3.795 m. There is a little gompa at the end and one house in the whole village. Continue walking through the valley to the North along the west side of the river Saspol Tokpo till you reach a river junction at 4.345 m, from here follow the path towards the west. Continue for an hour and you’ll be climbing the ridge to the North to reach the shepherd's place at 4.500 m. You’ll camp it here tonight.

  • Day 2 : Trek Shepherds Place to Lago-la Base Camp, 4 hrs.

Set off towards the North and on descending you’ll be walking over moraines along the stream, Saspol Tokpo. On reaching 4.600 m you’ll come across a dried up lake (called Zingog) which sometimes is used as a water supply for the village. On ascending 100m there is a small yellow lake called Tso Sermo. After an hour of trek, one comes across an abandoned shepherd's place. Just before arriving at the Base Camp which is at a junction of three valleys, one has to cross a river. Camp will be set at 5.000 m with a fine scenery.

  • Day 3 : Trek Lago-la Base Camp over Lago-la to Rakuruk Doksa, 9 hrs.

Getting higher and higher towards the North, one comes across the lake Tso Chiang Gongma at 5.180 m and reaches the pass Lago-la on 5400 m after 2.5 – 3 hrs of trek post departure. From here you’ll get a great view over the Zanskar range to the South and the Saltoro Range to the North. On descending towards lower plains, one first has to cross a little glacier/snowfield, depending on time of the year and snowfall. At the end the snow melts into water and gurgles down the valley and joins a river named Rhakura. At 5.100 m one comes across a huge valley filled with violet colored flowers. To get down towards lower altitude, one has to walk across several camping possibilities and eventually reach an old shepherd's place called Rakuruk. Doksa is located at the junction between two valleys. In the last few decades, some landslides had brought down huge boulders and covered the old tracks and hence became dangerous for the horses. But there has been a lot of work since then in making the track easier for the horses and also putting up stone piles to navigate following trekking groups. Camp will be set at 4.720 m after the last river-crossing (there have been 2-3 river crossings so far).

  • Day 4 : Trek Rakuruk Doksa to Rakuruk, 4,5 hrs.

One follows the Rakuruk river on the west side down along small pastures, gets glimpses of other valleys leading into the mountains and comes across a huge variety of vegetation. Finally one arrives in the small village of Rakuruk, containing seven houses and being located at an elevation of 4.040 m. Lots of water sources make the village a very bountiful one besides the barley- and green-pea-fields and the vegetable gardens.

  • Day 5 : Trek Rakuruk to Skuru, 3,5 hrs.

The sides of the river will narrow until it will turn into a small gorge where one has to follow the small path higher above the gurgling water. One has to be free of fear of heights and must be sure-footed. The gorge will open into the Nubra Valley at a small village of Skuru with around 300 inhabitants at an altitude of 3.150 m. Here one can camp or rent a room at one of the family houses.

  • Day 6 : Drive back to Leh

Today we’ll be driving back to Leh, 150 km via Khardong-la or use the opportunity to discover more of the Nubra Valley by visiting the beautiful villages of Hundar, Deskit, Sumur etc.
