Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Leh to Chalungdo (180 Kms/ 6 Hrs)

Drive from Leh to Chalungdo. This pleasant drive along the Indus river takes 4 hrs. On the way one can stop at Chumathang, famous for its Hot Springs. People come here for its medicinal healing and other health benefits. The village of Chumathang is located 2 km further west from the Hot Springs with a small monastery. 3 km ahead, the Mahe Bridge will be on the way to Tsomoriri and Tsokar, one can find several Camping grounds at the river Paldong at an altitude 4.200 m. Overnight stay in the Camp.

  • Day 2 : Trek Chalungdo to Doksa, 3 hrs.

Since the elevation in the altitude is abrupt, one can take it easy in walking uphill. In the surrounding area, you will find a lot of little bush-like flora, but this type of vegetation gets rarer as you climb higher. You’ll follow a small river and find many opportunities for camping. We recommend one at Doksa located at an altitude of 4.775 m on the right side of the valley, a beautiful place from where one can have a walk into a side-valley. Overnight stay in Camp.

  • Day 3 : Trek Doksa via Lungmar-la (5390M) to Camping, 7 hrs.

You’ll ascend with the river towards higher grounds. The landscape becomes wider and the real beauty of Changthang shall be revealed. On your way towards the pass, the river stops running parallel to you and one has to climb up to 5.390 m to reach the pass Lungmar-la. From there the view is breathtaking. On the right side, you’ll be observing the show-covered peaks of Chalung, Changser Kangi and Lungser Kangri rises high up in the sky, in a distant view one gets a glimpse of the lakes of Kyun Tso and parts of Tibet, the forbidden parts of the Changthang for Westerners. The downhill way is quite steep in loose sand so the other way round wouldn't be a nice option. But from the other side, it is fun to jump down towards a small gorge. In this upper region at 4.820 m, it is the only place with some water, which can be used as a camping ground. So don't walk too far! Overnight stay in Camp.

  • Day 4 : Trek Camping to Niddar, 4 hrs.

Today will be easier with a beautiful walk down the gorge, along the plateau on your left. Reaching at the lower region at 4.390 m, one enters the big valley and can visualise a rough road on the opposite side. In the small village of Tsongkar Karu at 4.265 m, it is better to stay on the left side. Tsongkar Karu has 16 houses and a small school. Another half an hour walk will bring us to Niddar, a slightly bigger village with a middle school and a monastery. There is a road leading towards Chumur (forbidden for western Tourists). The Camping in Niddar will be in a nice meadow just before the village. Overnight stay in Camp.
