Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Trek Leh to Sabu, 4 hrs.

Start directly from Leh (3.500 m) and walk via a small pass (3.800 m) to Sabu. In Sabu you can visit the monasteries. Then continue towards the upper end of Sabu since it is quite a large village, it’ll take some time but you're rewarded with many glimpses of village life. Camp at 3.850 m

  • Day 2 : Trek Sabu to Digar-la Base Camp, 4-5 hrs.

Cross over to the left side of the stream and follow it upwards. There, you’ll find a path which will seem to have been used by animals . There are many resting sites by the water and to enjoy the view of the Stok Range. At 4.900 m, a small plateau will appear with two valleys leading into the mountains. Pitch your tent at this beautiful site.

  • Day 3 : Trek Digar-la Base Camp to Chumik Yogma, 6,5 - 7 hrs.

You’ll continue your trek through the valley on your right side. Climb up while following the stream, but don't miss the Zig-zag-path towards the left leading to the pass. It takes quite some time to reach up to the pass which will seem closer than it is. But the view will always get better with higher altitudes. Digar-la is 5.435 m high and offers great views. The walk down along the river goes slowly via many mini plateaus. There will be many possible sites for pitching the tents – Chumik Yogma is a very beautiful campsite. Sleep at an altitude of 4.780 m.

  • Day 4 : Trek Chumik Yogma to Khyema, 7 hrs.

Today, you’ll be descending down through one of the most beautiful high altitude based valleys of Ladakh. Quite broadly it offers great views of the opposite mountain range while descending slowly mostly over green grass along the river. You might be able to witness Dzos and maybe some Yaks grazing, marmots peeping out of their holes and listening to the singing of birds. After 1.5 to 2 hours you’ll spot the wide spread fields of Digar village. Digar is at approx. 4.000 m high. The small Gompa is not always open and you’ll have to look for someone with the key. When you stare at the west, you’ll spot Tangyar and the valley leading towards Nebuk-la. Down to Kungru is a road with nearly no cars running over it, but there are lots of short-cuts to reach it. In Kungru 3.630 m, you’ll walk on the not-tarred road to reach the most beautiful village of Khyema at 4.140 m.

  • Day 5 : Khyema to Tangyar, 6 hrs.

From Khyema you’ll have to trek on a Zig-Zag-Path to reach the Khyema-la pass (4.620 m) and then walk down the trail to approach the road. Follow it down till Tangyar. Unfortunately there is this approx. 3 km walk on the road, which leads to Wari-la and it is not too bad. The beautiful scenery will accompany you on this route and you’ll also encounter locals in these quiet & rarely visited villages to add to your pleasure among these western parts of Nubra Valley. Tangyar has a spectacularly located small monastery and has beautiful old houses nestled at the foot of it. Camp on a meadow of 3.870 m.

  • Day 6 : Trek Tangyar to Jukthey, 5-6 hrs.

To find a path to get out of the village is a little tricky, but just keep going up the river and take the left path when reaching the bridge. And then keep walking until you reach the beautiful camp of Jukthey at 4.930 m with a small spring. On turning back, you’ll spot Digar and the trail you already trekked.

  • Day 7: Jukthey to Rale, 7 hrs.

Trek on the right side of the side-valley and continue until you reach the start of a zig-zag-path (not so easy to spot this point and don’t forget to watch out for stone piles) leading to the pass. The Nebuk-la is at an altitude of 5.385 m and offers a great view of the spectacular scenery. Walk down the valley and follow the river on your left side on an obvious trail. It’ll lead towards another valley on the right. Close to the junction you’ll find a small Doksa (shepherd's hut). From here to Rale, it is possible to walk on both sides of the river. Pitch your tent on 4.415 m a little away from reaching Rale.

  • Day 8: Rale to Durbuk (Zanmo raod), 4 hrs.

Take your time walking through Rale, maybe pay a visit to the small village government school, have a chat with the villagers – it is a nicely located place with people practicing farming and animal husbandry. Continuing on the right of the river-side, you’ll reach a small pass at 4.050 m, and you'll spot some old petroglyphs. You can walk down to meet people working on the road to Rale. Down to Zanmo, the road is dusty but alright to walk. In Zanmo it is better to ask the car to get you from there as the 4 km road to Durbuk is not really pleasant to walk since it goes through the military area. In Durbuk you could either head for a nice hot shower in a nearby hotel in Tangtse or you could continue directly towards the Pangong lake. And if time gets limited, just head back to Leh via Chang-la.
